Pet ferret rescued from the back of a car

Pet ferrets have been saved from the rear of a vehicle in the south west of the country after a man in his 50s pulled the animal from the car.

The animal was found on the side of the road with its legs hanging off the vehicle, police said.

“It was found by a passing motorist in the middle of the day and it was so weak that it was in danger of dying,” Sergeant David O’Connor said.

It was not known if the owner of the vehicle was arrested, but the incident happened at about 3.45pm (AEST) on Sunday.

“This is a very rare and dangerous situation,” Sergeant O’Donnell said.

Police said they were appealing for anyone who saw the animal to contact them.

“We would urge anyone with information to come forward,” he said.
