Peter Jackson, who has had the distinction of being nominated for both the best actor and best director Oscar, has admitted that he had never really thought about himself as gay until he was nominated for the best actress Oscar.
Jackson was nominated in 1997 for his role as Martin Luther King Jr. in the HBO movie Selma, which received two Golden Globys and a nomination for best picture.
The award came in the wake of the shooting of a Black man by police in Dallas, Texas.
Jackson had previously told Entertainment Weekly that he “didn’t know” that he was gay when he was in high school, but that he started coming out to friends when he started playing gay roles in the 1970s.
He told the magazine that he did not want to be “the one to define it”.
“But then I saw a picture of Peter Jackson and I knew I was a gay boy and I went to school with him,” Jackson told EW in a statement.
